good morning, america. this morning, the deadly arctic blast. a dangerous ice storm. one of the worst in years. paralyzing a huge swath of america right now, with travel delays and power outages. >> it's definitely here. >> and now, there's a new storm brewing. ginger has the latest. christmas grinches, caught on camera. the heartless thieves stealing freshly-delivered holiday packages from their own neighbors. we'll tell you how police finally caught the suspects. fallout from a shooting, captured on camera. the officer involved in this wild scene -- firing at a van filled with children, as it sped away. now, his bosses are taking action.

to the nasty weather, covering much of america this morning. there's the monster ice storm that caused death, damage and delay, in the middle of the country. and now, a new storm brewing in the northwest. at least 12 dead thus far. and it's not over yet. and ginger zee is on the story. good morning. >> hey, dan. so many folks spent their week looking like this. this picture from dallas. once we got rid of the ice, it was a lot of snow. in indiana, they had more than a foot in some places. this is almost about 11 inches you're seeing right there. that vincennes picture. that storm has moved on. you see it moving out. just a few rain showers left in parts of the carolinas this morning. you're waking up in the mid-atlantic or tennessee, and have a winter weather advisory or winter storm watch. this is sunday night into monday, another storm. and, yes, we're talking inches of ice possible, sleet, freezing rain. all that ugly stuff again. of course, we've got to talk about the west because there's another big one we're talking. that's corvallis, oregon.

they have big-time snow coming in. inches and inches in places that don't necessarily get it. and don't necessarily get it this early. look how much more snow is going to fall here. i'm going to bring you through the next 24 hours or so. this low-pressure system slips through the west. the mountains picking up quite a bit. could see sacramento and redding flakes coming in. and little rock, 20 degrees this morning. it does not get any better. and steve osunsami is there with a story on the ice. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. this storm, certainly left its mark here in little rock. the ice, still hard on the ground. the storm, of course, now barreling down on the northeast, delivering its first measurable snow of the season. overnight, the ice storms that rained down misery on the south friday, hit with every bit as much of a punch to the north and east. >> oh, my goodness. we're here. it's definitely here. >> reporter: in western pennsylvania, this brinks security truck losing control and slipping on its side.

in ohio, drivers trying to change lanes on the slippery highway, left four vehicles on the side of the road. two people had to be hospitalized. some words of advice for a driver out in the cold. >> don't be out there. be careful. >> reporter: overnight at the dfw airport in dallas, hundreds of canceled flights left 4,000 people stranded and frustrated, forced to spend the night on cots. this morning, 200,000 still without power, most in north texas. power lines were helpless to the ice. in arkansas, this power pole snapped in half. look at what the ice almost did to this bus in downtown little rock. the driver had to slow way down. >> conditions are so harsh, at least a dozen people have been killed since the storm. many in accidents like these. for children here, this was one of the first real winters many of them have ever seen. they told us, it's definitely ice and not snow because the snowballs they were throwing

hurt. >> yeah. >> reporter: those children hoping they won't have classes monday. and might certainly get their wishes if conditions continue. great news for the passengers who were stuck at airports overnight. those flights will be taking off today. bianna? >> good news, indeed. steve, our thanks to you. and we're going to turn to south africa, where the entire nation is mourning the death and celebrating the life of nelson mandela. a hero who spent nearly three decades of his life in prison. dignitaries from around the world will be arriving to take part in his funeral. and byron pitts is in jo hons hansburg. >> reporter: all day long here, a steady stream of humanity, as people have shown up, sometimes entire families.

here, we show their last respect for the man this entire nation so adored. as the world mourns the death of nelson mandela through song, dance and tears, details about his grand staged funeral are coming out. >> we all work together to organize the most befitting funeral. >> reporter: beginning tomorrow with a national day of prayer and reflection, for south africa. with an official service on tuesday in johannesburg, where thousands are expected to gather at the fnb stadium, the same stadium where mandela made his last appearance during the 2010 world cup. the services are expected to be the largest in generations, with prominent leaders and dignitaries across the globe attending. including president obama and the first lady, who travel to south africa next week, to pay respects, bringing along president and mrs. george w. bush. ♪ for three days, his body will

lie in state in pretoria, the base of the south african government. there, the public will have an opportunity to view his casket. a week from sunday, he will be buried in his ancestral home in qunu. overnight, desmond tutu led a prayer service in capetown, calling for his countrymen to carry on mandela's legacy. >> let us reach out to one another. and let madiba's dream be our dream. >> reporter: the mood here far more celebratory than sad, as people make the choice to embrace by what was given, instead of being sad by what was lost. every day here in south africa, until mr. mandela is finally laid to rest. >> a man who changed the world. our ron claiborne has covered nelson mandela extensively throughout the years. >> ron has had many experiences and memories. and is here with a personal take on the story.

>> when you cover a story or a person, it requires professional detachment. we're supposed to stand back, observe and report. for nelson mandela, it was difficult for me personally, because something kept getting in the way. the fact that i admired the man deeply. the first time i saw nelson mandela was at yankee stadium in 1990. six months after he had been released from prison. i was in awe, probably we all were. but then he did something that charmed all of us. >> you now know who i am. i am a yankee. >> reporter: as a college student, i read about this man serving a life sentence for fighting against apartheid. i was fired up by the slogan, free mandela. years later, at abc, i traveled to south africa to embezzle his birthplace and qunu, where he you up as a small child. and where he will be buried

alongside his parents. and earlier this year, i spent weeks in pretoria, outside his hospital, after waives of waives of south africans came singing and dancing, celebrating his life. ironically, mandela's hospital room was not far from the courthouse where, in 1963, he and seven co-defendants were tried for attempting to overthrow the white rule government. the trial began in this courtroom in pretoria. there was no jury. a judge would decide the fate of the defendants. the maximum penalty, death by hanging. a few months ago, i sat down with mac maharaj, a close friend with mandela's, who spent years with him in prison. i read and people who know nelson mandela, to some degree, he felt burdened by being an icon. it ha has to be tough. >> he always felt that. and that is why he then finds he

has to go an extra distance, not to disillusion you. >> reporter: mandela would often say, he was just a man, not a saint. but what a very special man. no, you did not disillusion us. i think what mandela was getting at when he said many times, i'm no saint. he didn't want to be seen as a kind of messiah. someone to be idolized, but like a person. someone who could be emulated. a model, not a myth. and hopefully, that will be his greatest legacy. >> interesting to hear that was burdensome, too. >> it is. >> ron, thanks. >> great to see the story through your eyes, ron. thank you. moving on. overnight, a major break in the case of the american veteran held as a war criminal in north korea, for more than a month. merrill newman is on a flight home. how did all this happen? abc's gloria riviera is on the story. >> reporter: after 42 days in

detention in north korea, merrill newman is on his way home. >> i appreciate the tolerance the dprk has given for me to be on my way. the 85-year-old korean war veteran traveled to north korea as a tourist, sightseeing for ten days, before officials from the communist regime of kim jong-un pulled him off his return flight. he was accused of committing hostile acts during the korean war. later, he appeared on television, apparently reading from a confession. newman's ordeal comes as tensions run high in the region. the secretive regime may have subdued nuclear threats for now, but refuses to step down completely. newman was released because he apologized for his crimes. his age and his medical condition. >> i think everyone who has made this possible and given us the opportunity to have merrill come home. >> reporter: in seoul, south

korea, joe biden praised the release. but also called for the return of kenneth bae, held for more than a year. >> mr. bae, who has no reason to be held, should be released immediately. >> reporter: for mr. newman's family, their wish for a homecoming before the holidays comes true. for "good morning america," gloria riviera, abc news, beijing. >> this will be a christmas that family will remember. let's get back to ron claiborne with the other headlines of the morning. >> we begin with new fallout from the chaotic highway shooting involving police in new mexico, firing at a car loaded with children. abc's tai hernandez has this story. >> reporter: this morning, abc news has confirmed the new mexico state police officer who fired at a minivan full of kids has been fired himself. the officer arrived as backup for this october routine traffic stop that escalated way too far, way too fast. it began with 39 oriana ferrell

was pulled over for speeding. but police say she did not follow the first officer's orders. >> turn the vehicle off for me. >> reporter: but once, but twice. her van takes off. >> right now, you ran away from me, okay? >> sir, i pulled back over. i didn't run away. >> reporter: the tension escalated when her 14-year-old son scuffled with police. and the moment state police cost officer montoya his job. as the van pulls away, three shots fired. she was arrested immediately following. she's pleaded not guilty to charges of child abuse, fleeing from authorities and possession of drug paraphernalia. for "good morning america," tai hernandez, abc news, new york. and the woman who was driving the car says she drove off because she was afraid. she said the officers not being charged with a crime is quote, in her words, injustice at its best. and terrifying moments inside a popular supermarket in

a new york city suburb, as an out-of-control car came slamming into the store. shoppers had to run for cover after the car plowed through the store front. one person was pinned under the wheel. 14 others were injured as shattered glass filled the store. an elderly woman lost control of that vehicle before the crash. so far, no charges have been filed. and in mexico, six men who checked into a hospital for possible radiation exemployee sure have been released. all of them had complained of skin irritations and dizziness. only one had nausea, a sign of possible radiation poisoning. the six are suspected of being the thieves who stole the truck carrying cobalt 60 that happened earlier this week. and federal charges expected to be filed against the hunter accused of sparking that massive fire in yosemite national park that occurred last summer. the rim fire destroyed 11 homes,

injured 10 people and scorched more than 1,200-square miles of land. officials have failed to identify that hunter. and washington, d.c. got a little bit brighter as president obama threw the switch, lighting the national christmas tree. joining the president for the lighting ceremony were the first lady, michelle obama, and daughters sasha and malia. aretha franklin and mariah carey were among the performers. and a dog breaking into a store in south carolina and going on a shopping spree. you e see him walking up to the store, only to have the store close on him. cleverly, he waits for his chance to slip inside with a customer. and during his one-minute crime spree, he managed to swipe, allegedly swipe some pig ears and bones. he was eventually caught and had to do some time in the local

pound. he has been released on bail. >> he looks remorseful there. >> keep an eye on that guy. may not be dog of the year next year. >> no. we go from a funny crime to a serious one. the couple suspected christmas shopping criminals caught on tape stealing presents just delivered and left on doorsteps. police say the alleged thieves were targeting people who live in their neighborhood. abc's reena ninan has more. talk about a brazen crime. your own neighbors? >> reporter: this might question your faith in humanity on this one here. 'tis the season for giving. but some people this year, are all about the taking. according to philadelphia police, the man and woman seen here in this surveillance video are real-life grinches. caught on tape, stealing christmas from their own neighbors' doorsteps. watch as moments after fedex makes their delivery, this duo pulls up in an suv and approaches a house with nobody

home. the male suspect grabs the box stashed inside the front door. the scroogey couple meets back at the car. the haul so big, they have to pop the trunk to fit it inside. 28-year-old amanda beason turned herself over to police on friday, after friends recognized her in this footage, aired earlier in the week. >> she showed up with the two packages and herself, and surrendered. >> reporter: and investigators said this man had gone from pinching presents to donning handcuffs. according to philly police, he, too, turned himself in. and is suspected to face the same charges. theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy. beason could not be reached for comment. and neither suspect has entered a plea. fedex says if you're worried about your packages being turned into someone else's stocking stuffer, you have other options. try picking it up in one of their stores.

>> a little less convenient. thank you, rena. now, to a super bowl's champ's request for another title. brett favre returned to his native mississippi right after his retirement in 2010, for life on the sidelines. >> since then, he's been busy coaching a team near his home, trying to win a high school state championship. abc's rob nelson has results of the big game. a lot of people probably doing double-takes. >> reporter: he has done it again. >> it's not the super bowl. but it's pretty close. >> reporter: it may be a far cry from lambeau field. but super bowl champion brett favre has captured another title. this time, as the offensive coordinator for the oak roads high school warriors. the warriors faced off against the tupelo golden wave in the mississippi state championship game friday night. >> i couldn't be more proud of these kids. >> reporter: after a scoreless first half, oak grove took the lead on a fake field goal and

went on to win, 14-7. >> he taught me everything i know about playing the position. and he's been a blessing in my life and for our team. >> reporter: away from the bright lights of the nfl, favre and his squad of star-struck high schoolers seemed right at home under the friday night lights. now, favre has been with the school the last two seasons. but this is oak grove's first-ever state title. and the victory is especially sweet since favre's youngest daughter attends that school. good story. >> attendance has increased ten-fold since he started. >> no question, with brett favre on the sidelines. >> thanks, rob. time for a check of the weather. back over to ginger. >> imagine getting in your car. and your look at the dashboard and it says this. that's 35 below. and it's true. it's happening in montana. it feels like it's 35 below in a lot of places. look at the windchills this morning. that surge of cold air is only going to be reenforced this week. is it going to feel like 16

below in rapid city? close to 50 below? 8 below in kansas city. and 4 below in chicago. yes. until midweek and beyond, do we start to see any moderation at all. look at this arctic blast, pushing down. the jet stream allows all of the cold air from the poles to slip in. in maryland, they're going to feel balmy at 16 monday. minneapolis will stay in single digits if the 14 makes it there. and chicago, finally back into the 20s as we start the workweek. but, boy, is that cold air in place. and it's happening in california, too. they have a lot at stake. the lemons, citrus, the oranges, all going to be sprayed. the wind machines are on. this is in fresno. it's a problem all week. and look at the freeze warnings throughout california. even close to the coast. 22 sacramento. 5, early tomorrow morning, in reno. it's going to be 5, the cold. had plenty of tweets from people in florida. we're in the 80s.

that story is coming up. we begin this half hour with new hope that a teenager missing since october may actually be alive. >> abigail hernandez, the 15-year-old from new hampshire, went missing walking home from school. then a month later, out of the blue, a sign in the form of a letter. with this letter, concern that abigail may be in grave danger. linzie janis has more. >> reporter: police are revealing evidence in the disappearance of abigail hernandez, the 15-year-old who hasn't been seen since leaving her new hampshire high school on october 9th. authorities now say the teen sent her mother a letter, two weeks after she mysteriously vanished. >> law enforcement had to take every possible step to verify its authenticity. we believe that it was, in fact, written by abbie. >> reporter: investigators are not disclosing the content of the letter. but are convinced abigail may be in grave danger. >> someone may be now coercing

her. someone may now be manipulating her. and her safety is absolutely in question. >> reporter: police releasing photos of a necklace and purse abbie had been known to wear regularly. and appealing to the public for help. >> we're asking you, look at your neighbor. look at the grocery store. look at your church. is there somebody that you haven't seen here before? >> reporter: this is the last known photo of abbie, seen walking through the hallway of her school on the day that she vanished. police say that evening was the last time her cell phone was used. investigators have been searching ever since, knocking on doors, looking in the local woods and river. abigail's distraught mother, delivering this message to her daughter just days after she went missing. >> abbie, please come home. we miss you so badly. >> reporter: the fbi investigator working on the case says receiving the letter is unprecedented. he hasn't seen anything like this in recent investigations. and it gives him hope that she's still alive. again, they're worried she may be being held against her will.

>> it's such a remarkable development. we hope for the family's sake, they find her soon. a lot of other news breaking overnight. for that, as always, mr. ron claiborne. >> in the news, dignitaries around the world will be arriving in south africa next week for a memorial service on tuesday for nelson mandela. a private burial in qunu is set up for next sunday. and the 85-year-old veteran in north korea for a month, is on his way home. merrill newman flew from pyongyang to beijing on saturday. the north koreans accused-i'm committing hostile acts during the korean war. and federal regulators are calling for major changes following last sunday's deadly derailment in new york city. the railroad will be required to have two people operating rains that ride on potentially dangerous routes. four people were killed in the derailment. dozens of others were injured. and bob dylan's electric guitar, the one that made rock
